Over the years as we have helped so many families, we have found that residential care homes are one of the least known options when it comes to senior care. It is also one of the more common care solutions that the families we help end up selecting.
Residential care homes are typically located within a residential area and you might not even know what it is when driving by. Residential care homes might often have less than 20 residents (some as few as 5) currently residing there at a given time.
The fact that this option is often found in suburban or smaller community settings can mean a closer proximity to the caregiver.
What is a Residential Care Group Home?
As mentioned, these are typically much smaller in size compared to a dedicated assisted living facility (or nursing home). You will typically see 5 – 20 residents in a group home with a staff dedicated to helping them with everyday activities (bathing, toileting, etc.).
The reason we find that so many families might not know about this as a senior care option is how much the names can vary from state to state. You might hear them called: Residential Care for the Elderly (RCFE), personal care home, domiciliary care, or adult foster care. The name can vary but the benefits often stay consistent. Some of those benefits are:
- Desirable Staff to Resident Ratio:As the number of residents in a residential group home are often much smaller in size, you will see a smaller ratio from staff to residents. If you feel that is important, this might be a benefit to take note of when comparing to a traditional larger assisted living facility.
- Everything is Included: You will likely see that most of the residential care homes in Utah County offer all food/meals and daily assistance included in their monthly fees.
- Still Feel at Home: One of the most consistent pieces of feedback we get from local Utah families we help place in this type of care is their loved one still feels like they’re at home. Assisted living facilities have taken great strides in this aspect but residential care homes can often feel less “clinical” and provide your loved one with a feeling of being right back at their own home.
